Do you know the secret of beta-glucan?

2018-12-25

What is beta-glucan?

Beta-glucan is a kind of polysaccharide rich in mushrooms, yeast, seaweed, cereals, etc., and belongs to dietary fiber.
Specific effects of improving the immunity of the whole body have been continuously researched throughout the world since its discovery.
The β-glucan contained in the fungus acts on lymphocytes present in the intestine, which enhances intestinal immunity and has the function of regulating systemic immunity.

Beta-glucans comprise a very diverse group of polysaccharides, but only very few have immune modulatory properties. Beta-1,3/1,6-glucan derived from baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is the most studied beta-glucan and by far the best documented in terms of immune stimulatory efficacy, mode of action and safety, and is hence considered superior to beta-glucans from other sources.

The molecular structure of baker’s yeast beta-1,3/1,6-glucan (see figure below) is similar to that of a potentially damaging microorganism, like for example found in harmful yeasts. Evolution has taught immune cells, so-called macrophages, to recognize such structures in order to fight them more efficiently. Macrophages are equipped with special receptors which bind to baker’s yeast beta-glucan, thanks to its molecular structure.

Why do we need fiber?

We get dietary fiber from the plant-based foods we eat. Soluble fibers, like beta glucan, dissolve partially in water. Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve at all. Most foods have both kinds of fiber, but the amounts can vary. There are also different kinds of soluble and insoluble fiber.

Fiber supports good health by helping your body reduce cholesterol and control blood sugar levels. It also helps with constipation and bowel issues, maintains healthy gut bacteria, and aids in weight control. The Mayo Clinic recommends that men and women ages 50 and under eat 38 grams (g) and 25 g per day, respectively. Men and women ages 51 and over should get 30 g and 21 g per day. Teenagers may need 30 to 35 g a day.

Ingestion and action:

Β-glucan has the effect of improving immune function and has the function of protecting the body from diseases.
Β-glucan is a substance contained in many fungi. Among a variety of fungi, the Ganoderma lucidum of the Hericium family family and the Agaricus blazei of the original bamboo family have good health effects, and have been used as raw medicine or health care since ancient times. The raw materials of the product.
Even if it is ingested, it is difficult to be digested and absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract because it is a dietary fiber with a high molecular weight.

What are the benefits of beta glucan?

1.Boosts heart health;
2.Regulates blood sugar levels;
3.Stimulates immune system.
