What is Serratia peptidase, or serrapeptase? Enzyme acticity?SPU and SU IU and U?

2018-03-24

Serratia peptidase, or serrapeptase, is a proteolytic enzyme produced by the Serratia bacteria that lives in the intestines of silkworms. Serrapeptase has been used successfully for almost 40 years in Europe and Asia to treat pain, inflammation, trauma-induced swelling and excessive mucous secretion.

IMAHERB BIOTECH is one of the professional and credible top quality Serratia peptidase, or serrapeptase for sale manufacturers, who is dedicated to produce the top quality organic products which is of great benefits to customers. A number of studies have shown it to have benefits for human health :It acts as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic, similar to aspirin, ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

– It induces fibrinolytic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oedema effects in many tissues; its anti-inflammatory effects are superior to those of other proteolytic enzymes. Serrapeptase works by fragmenting fibrinous aggregates, reducing the viscosity of exudates and by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators, thus facilitating drainage of these inflammatory response products thereby promoting the process of tissue repair.

-It is particularly effective for relieving chronic ear, nose and throat (ENT) inflammation, producing significant reductions in pain severity, quantity and purulence of secretions, difficulty in swallowing, dysphonia and nasal obstruction. Studies have highlighted its beneficial effects in normalising broncho-pulmonary secretions (mucous).

-It helps reduce toxins in the intestine as well as reactions to foreign bodies.

-It boosts antibiotic activity and tackles bacterial resistance by inhibiting formation of their natural protective biofilm.

-In addition, because serrapeptase is able to digest dead tissue – indeed, this is how it releases the silkworm from its cocoon – it can be used to restrict arterial obstruction (atheromatous plaques) and facilitate circulation. Hans Neiper, the world-renowned German doctor and scientist, has reported significant improvements from serrapeptase treatment in the circulation of a number of patients with previously compressed arteries.

-As with all enzymes, serrapeptase is sensitive to stomach acids. To improve its efficacy and bioavailability, new technology has enabled it to be produced in a gastroresistant form, DR Caps, which release their content only in the small intestine.

QUESTIONS:

What is ENZYME ACTIVITY

Enzymes are proteins that carry an electrical charge.(Similar to the batteries we use in our everyday electronics.) Enzymes circulate in the body by interacting with certain substrates until their charge is simply used up. Enzymes can also be exhausted in bodily reactions or degraded slowly even if they remain inactive.  Various factors may affect the activity of enzymes, by either affecting the frequency of enzyme-substrate collisions or by affecting the capacity for the enzyme and substrate to interact.Temperature, pH and substrate concentration will all influence the rate of activity of an enzyme

Serrapeptase, however, is a special enzyme that comes in all strengths and concentrations. This section describes why using an IU or International Unit of measurement for vitamins cannot be used to accurately describe the quality of enzymes and their activity.Enzyme’s potency is the number one factor in determining how well it works, understanding what these measurements mean and how they relate to each other is essential in order to be able to compare Serrapeptase enzyme supplements, choose the most effective one, and to take an effective dosage.

SPU and SU:

SPU (serratiopeptidase units) and SU (serrapeptase units) are essentially the same units and can be used interchangeably. Both SPU and SU measure the activity or potency of the Serrapeptase enzyme based on a specific scientific test. Therefore, SPU and SU are considered the ‘active units’ of Serrapeptase. “S” represents Serrapeptase and “SP” represents Serratiopeptidase in this case, virtually 2 acronyms for the exact same enzyme. Since several enzymes begin with the letter S, SP has been adopted as the more common abbreviation for Serrapeptase.

IU and U:

IU = Used for vitamins and minerals; was developed by the Expert Committee on Biological Standardization which is a functioning body of World Health Organization.

U = Used for enzymes; was developed by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB).

SPU and IU:

IUs are a completely different measurement than SPU or SU. An IU is defined as the quantity of a biological substance (usually a vitamin or hormone) that produces a specific biological effect that has been agreed upon as an international standard. Despite its name, IU is not part of the International System of Units used in physics and chemistry. The IU should not be confused with the enzyme unit, also known as the International unit of enzyme activity and abbreviated as U.

Although IUs are a measure of potency, they can’t be used to describe enzymes. This is because the method for measuring the potency of the Serrapeptase enzyme and other enzymes isn’t the same as measuring the potency of a vitamin. For Serrapeptase, it isn’t the quantity (usually measured in milligrams or mg) that counts;  Look for Serrapeptase brands with higher SPUs or SUs to get a higher Serrapeptase dosage.
