What Is DMAE?

What Is DMAE?

 DMAE (Deanol, dimethylethanolamine, dimethylaminoethanol) is a natural precursor of acetylcholine and nootropic found in food and in the body. Virtually all nutritional supplements include DMAE in the form of a dissolved salt of L-bitartrate.

DMAE and choline have a similar structure, and DMAE is a choline with one remote methyl group. Both can increase the level of acetylcholine in the brain, but while the cholines are processed in the liver, DMAE is transported directly through the BBB. That is why DMAE acts more directly when it is needed to increase memory and concentration.

It is recommended to start using it with a small dose and gradually increase it to the recommended dose. The body adapts to large doses, which can lead to temporary muscle stiffness in shoulders and neck. This almost never occurs if DMAE is taken in usual doses, but it is better to increase the dose at least in one week.

The drug DMAE is sold in the USA and Europe under the brand names Lucidril and Deaner.

DMAE, when ingested in the body, turns into acetylcholine.

Special Note: to prolong our life, we need to refuse from the excessive consumption of animal products and switch to vegetable. However, such nutrition can cause the deficit of acetylcholine. Therefore, to prolong life, we should choose the following strategy — switch to mainly vegetable nutrition and use DMAE!

DMAE has an antioxidant effect. It protects cells against damage caused by their most dangerous types of free radicals. It also prevents the cross-linking of molecules.

With aging, lipofuscin, the toxic pigment, accumulates in the cells of the brain, CNS, skin, heart, and other parts of the body. Earlier, it was believed that lipofuscin is just garbage, an aging pigment. Now it is known that lipofuscin causes the poisoning of cells. By the old age, each cell will have packed with lipofuscin by 30%. DMAE removes up to half or more of this garbage within a period of several months to two years. Obviously, if you start taking DMAE when you are young, you may prevent a significant accumulation of lipofuscin in the cells.

DMAE significantly improves blood properties, including capturing and transferring oxygen to tissues. It has been proven that the addition of DMAE to conserved blood increases its shelf life in 2 times. All of these effects lead to a significant prolongation of life. Also, DMAE like all nootropics stimulates the brain function, including:

  • Enhances memory;
  • Enchases concentration;
  • Enchases cognition;
  • Improves mood;
  • Improves sleep;
  • Causes vivid dreams;
  • Increases the energy in the body (that is why it is often used by athletes);
  • Increases the elasticity of the skin, its appearance, and tone.

DMAE helps stay young! Skin aging is characterized by many changes, including the formation of wrinkles, staining, discoloration, rupturing of blood vessels, and the lack of gloss. However, the face reveals the actual age not only because of the look of the skin surface. The skin on the chin, on the nose, and along the line of the jaw begins to sag.

Why do muscles begin to sag? When you tense the arm muscles or the muscles of your face to smile, the impulse is transmitted by your nerves (the process is similar to the functioning of an electrical wire) to that part of the muscle tissue that has to respond. There is a thickening at the end of the nerve, where, as in a tank, chemicals are accumulated. One of them is acetylcholine. Every time a certain amount of acetylcholine reaches the muscle tissue, it enhances the tone or movement.

Like all other systems of the body, the nervous system also ages due to the continuing harmful effects of free radicals and malnutrition. As aging begins, both the amount of acetylcholine and its effect on muscles decrease. The only way to reverse the process (which means getting a greater degree of muscle response and firmer skin) is to increase the level of active acetylcholine in the body, which can be achieved through proper nutrition and the use of DMAE both externally and internally. As a result, the overall well-being improves as well as nutrition of the skin.

However, the most impressive changes from DMAE are seen on the neck and the lower part of the face. The skin tone of the neck improves, and in several weeks the contour of the lower part of the face is toned. The most significant effect of DMAE is seen in the natural eye lift.

All participants of the study reported that in a few weeks the skin around the eyes began to look more elastic and firm. DMAE in combination with antioxidants helps solve another problem that affects the appearance — thin or aging skin around the lips. DMAE even allows making too thin lips larger or remove thin mimic wrinkles and lines from them. A clinical study proves that DMAE really helps increase blood circulation and increase the tone of the lips, which makes them look larger and firmer.

DMAE is considered to be a part of food, so you can take it without harm to your health. After a long-term use of it, some of the patients noted that their nose tip slightly lifted because DMAE improved the tone of the muscle tissue of the forehead. Nothing gives the face such a younger look than a lifting of the lowered nose tip.

The dosage of DMAE is 100-1,500 mg per day. To prolong life, it is recommended to limit the dose to 300-450 mg per day and take it for several months. To improve the overall condition, increase mental and physical abilities, it should be taken for 1-3 months at a dose of 500-1,000 mg per day. Start using it with a small dose and gradually increase it. The medication is taken in the morning and in the afternoon. If it is tolerated well, you can take it before food; otherwise, with food. You will know that it works effectively when you start having a deeper sleep and realistic dreams, easy twitching of muscles, better concentration of attention. You should note that these effects, usually, occur when the medication is used in a daily dosage of 450 mg or more.

Side Effect and Contraindications

Since DMAE is a naturally produced substance that can be found in various foods and in the body, side effects may only occur in case of a significant overdose. The following are side effects that may occur:

  • Headache;
  • Insomnia;
  • Gastrointestinal problems;
  • Overly vivid dreams.

Some people believe that DMAE stimulates too much, and others may experience impaired cognitive functions or drowsiness.

In this case, you should lower the dose or temporarily stop taking this medication. You should check how DMAE works for you before driving or using machinery. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as patients with bipolar and convulsive disorder, should not use DMAE.

If the level of homocysteine in the blood is high (relates to cardiovascular diseases), kidney and liver diseases, you should consult a doctor before using DMAE.
