2018-04-27

What is Panax Notoginseng (Pseudoginseng)

Panax notoginseng, also known as pseudoginseng, is a plant that belongs to the Panax genus, along with Panax ginseng.
It is a member of the Araliaceae family and grows in China and Japan. The roots of the Panax notoginseng plant have been used in Chinese medicine for centuries to stop bleeding and improve blood flow.
Panax notoginseng is not the same as Panax ginseng. These two plants share some of the same chemical constituents, known as saponins, but they provide different types of benefits.
Panax ginseng, or true ginseng, is considered an adaptogen that helps the body handle environmental stress. It is also used for improved health overall, as well as improved immune function and cognition, according to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database.
Panax notoginseng is not considered an adaptogen. It is associated with different effects, such as hemostatic properties. Consumers who want to use Panax notoginseng products should know how this supplement works and what types of risks are associated with its use.

Uses of Panax Notoginseng Extract (Pseudoginseng)

Panax notoginseng also has other medicinal uses when taken in oral form, such as improving blood cholesterol and blood pressure levels, relieving pain and reducing swelling.
It has also been used for dizziness, acute sore throat and ischemic stroke. Some Panax notoginseng products also claim that this ingredient assists with weight loss and improves sleep.
There are also topical forms of Panax notoginseng, which are applied to the skin in the affected area. This is purported to stop bleeding from wounds.
Many of these uses are based on traditional medicine practices and have not been validated by double-blind placebo controlled research studies. The FDA has not approved this plant extract as a medicine for the prevention, amelioration or treatment of any health conditions.

Benefits of Panax Notoginseng (Pseudoginseng)

Panax notoginseng contained chemical constituents known as steroidal saponins that are purported to be responsible for its beneficial effects.
According to a 2012 study that appeared in the Journal of Ginseng Research, these Panax notoginseng saponins are referred to as dammarane-type ginsenosides.
These ginsenosides have been identified as 20(S)-protopanaxatriol (ppt) and 20(S)-protopanaxadiol (ppd), according to a 2015 study that appeared in Natural Product Research.
The results of a 2004 study that appeared in Planta Medica showed that Panax notoginseng might have a higher content of ginsenosides, such as Rb1, Rd and Rg1, when compared to other plants belonging to the Panax genus.
The exact effects of these active ingredients are not fully understood. According to PubChem, ginsenosides affect a number of pathways in the body, which causes difficulties for researchers in terms of isolating and studying them.
According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, there is insufficient evidence to support claims that Panax notoginseng is effective for weight loss and for improving sleep.
It might be beneficial for ischemic stroke based on the findings of preliminary research, according to NCMD.
According to a 2010 study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, the flavonol glycoside, which comes from the roots of Panax notoginseng, might be useful for the development of pharmaceutical drugs for preventing or managing Alzheimer’s disease.
However, more research is needed to evaluate these claims.
