Arthritis Supplements- Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM

Many people with arthritis — especially osteoarthritis — use supplements in their diet to ease the pain of arthritis. Glucosamine and chondroitin are the most well-known. Methyl sulfonylmethane (MSM) is another supplement used to ease the pain of arthritis, but it has not been through as much scientific testing.

It is important to check with your doctor before starting any new treatments. Your doctor can review the other medications you are taking and help you decide whether or not these arthritis supplements are right for you. In addition, always follow the instructions on the medication label. Do not take more of the supplements than is recommended.

Glucosamine sulfate may be more effective than prescription drugs

The evidence behind glucosamine sulfate in some ways exceeds that for any drug used to treat OA: duration of effectiveness. Two three-year studies have shown a sustained reduction in pain and associated symptoms in persons with OA of the knee but also a slowing of the progression of the actual disease process. Both studies employed specific X-ray methods to directly demonstrate a reduction of the rate of the structural damage within an affected knee. Of equal importance is the finding that side effects between the placebo and GS users were very mild and did not differ between the groups, a testament to the long-term safety and tolerability of GS.

Glucosamine provides the natural building blocks for growth, repair and maintenance of cartilage. It also attracts water that serves the gel-like nature of joints, helping to maintain lubrication and shock absorption. Glucosamine is also a structural component to other important tissues such as tendons, ligaments, heart valves, mucous membranes, hair and nails.

But as with many bodily processes, glucosamine production decreases as we age. Studies suggest supplemental glucosamine can reduce stiffness, swelling, pain and degeneration associated with OA, as it is a key component in cartilage and joint health.

Chondroitin is also a major component of cartilage and joint health. It helps by absorbing water and providing resistance to compression. Studies suggest it can reduce pain, stiffness and swelling and improve joint function associated with OA. But chondroitin is not absorbed nearly as well as glucosamine and, head to head, glucosamine appears to be more effective. Nevertheless, chondroitin can be a good complement to the work your glucosamine is doing.

Methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM) is a biologically useful form of sulfur, the third most abundant mineral in our bodies with widespread applications throughout. Sulfur is a critical building block for cartilage, and sulfur from MSM strengthens joint tissues and helps with elasticity. Known as “nature’s beauty mineral,” MSM also improves skin health, strengthens hair and nails, and can improve detoxification, accelerate healing and increase energy.

Identifying the differences between the three can help you understand why you might want to include chondroitin and MSM in your glucosamine regimen—it can offer more comprehensive relief from arthritic pain and help improve joint function.

Study shows a single daily dose is all that’s needed

One of the distinctive findings of these two 36 month studies is how the subjects took the GS. Many marketers of glucosamine products recommend taking three doses of 500 mg per day. However, the majority of the evidence revealing a therapeutic effect of GS has used a single dose of 1,500 mg. Setting aside the evidence to support this dosing regimen, a single daily dose also makes compliance a whole lot easier. A bottle of GS permanently situated next to the toothbrush or in the center of the dining table, linked to the knowledge that “Once daily is all that I need” will likely promote a greater frequency of use and defer the need to buy a Ginkgo extract to help remember to take it three times daily.

Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM, it’s a good choose for Arthritis Supplements.
